Madagascar's first wind farm is now operational in Tolagnaro. With 19 turbines, it brings the capacity of QMM's hybrid solar-wind power plant to 30 MW.
The first wind farm in Madagascar is now operational in Fort-Dauphin, in the Anôsy region. Developed by QIT Madagascar Minerals (QMM) in partnership with CrossBoundary Energy (CBE), the park comprises nineteen turbines with an installed capacity of 16 MW. Its commissioning, officially completed in July 2026, strengthens the renewable energy production infrastructure already present in the region.
This new installation complements QMM's solar power plant, whose first phase with a capacity of 8 MW began producing electricity in 2023. Solar capacity was later increased by 6 MW two years later, bringing total power to 14 MW. With the 16 MW from the wind farm, the facility now forms a hybrid solar-wind power plant of 30 MW.
The wind farm consists of nineteen turbines installed starting in January 2025. All turbines are now operational and can produce up to 16 MW of electricity. This combination of solar and wind energy diversifies production sources and strengthens Tolagnaro's energy supply.
To manage intermittency related to weather conditions, the site also has a battery energy storage system (BESS) with a capacity of 16 MWh. This system allows better regulation of production and contributes to stable power supply.
The electricity produced covers most of QMM's mining site operational needs. Part of the production is also fed back into Jirama's local network to supply homes and businesses in Fort-Dauphin. The project thus extends beyond mining sector needs and also contributes to the city's electricity supply.
This achievement is part of QMM's "Sustainable Mine" program, which aims to reduce carbon emissions from its industrial activities. The use of renewable energy sources is a lever to decrease the site's carbon footprint while strengthening local electricity production.
Beyond electricity generation, project managers also highlight expected benefits for the Anôsy region. More stable energy supply should contribute to the development of services, infrastructure, and economic activities. Electricity is indeed essential for schools, health centers, businesses, and enterprises to function.
