A tragic accident claimed the life of a 4-year-old girl in Antranombitsika, in the fokontany of Ambohidrano Andrefana, Sabotsy Namehana commune, the day before yesterday. The child was struck by a garbage collection truck while it was transporting waste to the Ambatolampy landfill. According to gendarmerie reports, the accident occurred on a bend along the road connecting Sabotsy Namehana to Viliahazo commune. Excessive speed combined with a major mechanical failure—a steering system rupture—rendered the heavy vehicle completely uncontrollable. The truck veered off course and struck the young child. She was rushed to Anosy Avaratra district hospital but succumbed to the severity of her injuries.
This tragedy highlights a terrifying reality that exasperates residents: the irresponsible and near-criminal driving of certain garbage truck operators. Under the pretext of serving the state, some drivers believe they can do whatever they please. Many of them travel through the capital's streets and surrounding areas in flagrant disregard of traffic laws and public safety. Parking indiscriminately and blocking traffic, or speeding through residential zones in poorly maintained, dilapidated vehicles constitutes criminal negligence. The driver has been taken into custody at the Sabotsy Namehana gendarmerie brigade for investigation. Beyond legal proceedings, urgent action is needed: strict mechanical inspections of these heavy vehicles must be implemented before more lives are lost to human recklessness.
