For several days, water supply has become difficult again in certain neighborhoods of Antananarivo. Pressure drops, disruptions and sometimes outages are being observed in different sectors of the capital. This situation coincides with the return of electricity cuts, following a period of improved supply. For users, difficulties could continue next week. JIRAMA has announced new water distribution disruptions starting Monday, August 24, 2026. They are expected to last four days and affect many neighborhoods in the capital. The cause of this announced situation is a temporary halt in production at UCT 1000, a water treatment and purification station recently put into service. The facility has an announced production capacity of 24,000 m³. According to explanations provided by JIRAMA, this shutdown is necessary to continue operations aimed at improving the infrastructure's performance and allowing it to reach full capacity. The planned work includes notably increasing the water flow rate pumped by the pumps. During these works, the temporary reduction in production should have consequences on the supply to several sectors of Antananarivo and its surroundings. The Upper Town, Faravohitra, Ambatonakanga, Antaninarenina, Amparibe, Mahamasina, Behoririka, Ankadifotsy, Manjakaray and Anjanahary are notably among the areas likely to be affected. Amboditsiry, Ankatso, Fort-Duchesne, Antsahameva, Andraisoro, Ambohipo, Alasora and Ambohitsoa are also included in the announcement. Water reserves recommended Facing these four days of announced disruptions, the national company recommends affected households to prepare by building up water reserves before work begins. This new announcement comes, however, in an already difficult context for some residents. For several days, water supply problems have been reported in neighborhoods of the capital, even before the scheduled intervention on August 24. Added to these difficulties is the return of disruptions on the electrical network. After a period during which cuts seemed to have eased, electricity interruptions have again been observed. For residents facing simultaneous water and electricity problems, the announcement of four additional days of water disruptions risks reviving concerns. JIRAMA nevertheless presents this work as a necessary step to sustainably strengthen water production capacity for Antananarivo.
