Volunteers are actively collecting waste from marine algae polluting the beach. This year, the Kopakelatra team, the environmental branch of STAR, decided to start its cleanup operation earlier than usual. Normally scheduled for September during World Clean Up Day, the action was launched at Star Tour Majunga 2026, with Petite Plage as the first intervention site. This initiative is part of several approaches, including expressing gratitude to the city of Majunga for hosting a major event like Star Tour, alongside its primary mission, according to Soa-Mihanta Andriamanantena, head of institutional communication and CSR at STAR.

A Solidarity Cleanup
About a hundred volunteers from various local associations participated voluntarily in this initiative on Monday, August 17. Together, they collected waste, separating plastics and other debris to facilitate recycling. The Special Delegate President of the Urban Municipality of Majunga, Dolsain Guy Harvely, was also present. He reminded residents that city cleanliness should not rely solely on such initiatives, but on every citizen. He invited inhabitants to develop the habit of keeping beaches and streets clean, even after tourists leave.

Since its creation, Kopakelatra has collected over 270 tonnes of plastic across six Malagasy cities. This waste is not discarded: it is transformed into useful products such as down jackets or interlocking paving stones for urban development. These innovations prove that every bottle collected can have a second life.

Kopakelatra plans to continue its actions in other cities, strengthening awareness of selective sorting and multiplying partnerships to transform waste into resources.
