Michaël Randrianirina Defends Political Dialogue to Accelerate Elections
The president of the Refondation of the Republic, Colonel Michaël Randrianirina, is defending the political consultations that have been underway for several weeks in Madagascar. Upon his return from the Southern African Development Community (SADC) summit held in Durban, South Africa, the head of state explained that this approach was part of electoral governance and was intended to support the CENI in preparing for the upcoming elections. "It is to help the CENI that I am conducting political consultation, even political dialogue," Michaël Randrianirina declared upon his arrival. According to him, the objective is to bring the positions of various political leaders closer together in order to accelerate the process leading the country toward elections. The president of the Refondation thus assures that these consultations are not aimed at prolonging the transitional period. He claims instead to want to "tune the instruments" among political actors to move quickly in organizing the elections and end the transition. This statement also constitutes an indirect response to criticism leveled against the presidential initiative. For several weeks, Michaël Randrianirina has been receiving and consulting various political leaders, an approach that has raised concerns, particularly among certain Gen Z youth movements that participated in the protests that led to the fall of the former Andry Rajoelina regime. Criticism has focused notably on Siteny Randrianasoloniaiko, president of the National Assembly. Gen Z movements continue to demand his departure and some are even calling for the dissolution of the current National Assembly. Regarding the electoral calendar, Michaël Randrianirina also clarified his exchanges during the Durban summit. The head of state affirms that he did not announce a specific date for the next elections to his SADC counterparts. However, he indicated that elections could be organized "from July 2027 onwards." Michaël Randrianirina did not specify in this statement the nature of the election in question. The question of the electoral calendar thus remains at the heart of the transition. The political consultations undertaken by the presidency are presented as a step intended to create the necessary conditions for organizing elections and returning to institutional functioning resulting from the ballot box.
