A outing with friends turned tragic on Sunday afternoon in the Sakay River. A 17-year-old young man who had just obtained his baccalaureate degree lost his life after being swept away by the current. The tragedy occurred on Sunday, August 16, under the Sakay bridge. The young man, who was staying in Ankadinondry-Sakay during the holidays, had gone there with a friend to take a walk and take some photos. As they attempted to cross on a rock, the young man reportedly suddenly slipped. The particularly smooth surface of the stone may have contributed to his fall. He then fell into an area described as very deep, before being swept away by the current. Alerted, rescue teams and residents began searching Sunday evening. Operations continued throughout Monday, but without success. It was not until Tuesday morning, around 6 a.m., that the young man's body was finally found, near the location of his disappearance. Local beliefs evoked. The young man's disappearance also revived certain local beliefs linked to this part of the river. Residents notably mention the supposed presence of a "zazavavindrano," while others refer to the "lolo," another traditional belief. After the failure of initial search efforts, traditional Malagasy rites were reportedly performed at the site. Shortly after, the victim's body resurfaced near where he had disappeared. An investigation has been opened.
