July 2027 Elections: Ceni Confirms Schedule is Achievable
Organizing elections in July 2027 should encounter no major technical obstacles, according to Thierry Rakotonarivo, president of the Independent National Electoral Commission (Ceni), as authorities have reaffirmed their commitment to the twenty-four-month timeline outlined in the Refoundation process. For the electoral commission, the announced schedule remains entirely feasible. One of the main preparatory tasks before the vote—a complete overhaul of the electoral register—must be completed by April 2027. The Ceni would thus have several months to finalize remaining preparations before the July election. "The electoral register will be entirely ready. There will therefore be no problem organizing elections in July," Thierry Rakotonarivo stated. This position reinforces the prospect of an election within the announced timeframe, even though the exact nature of the election to be held has not yet been determined. This deadline was again discussed at the highest level of state. During his visit to Durban on Sunday, Colonel Michaël Randrianirina reaffirmed, in discussions with South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, that the twenty-four-month period would be respected. At this stage, statements from authorities do not suggest any extension of the Refoundation schedule beyond the planned deadline. Consultations before the vote While material preparation raises no particular concerns at the Ceni, several political and legal parameters remain to be examined. The commission intends to continue discussions with various stakeholders to determine improvements to the electoral system. These exchanges should notably address rules governing elections, the functioning of the electoral system, and practical conditions for organizing the next vote. The Ceni thus wishes to involve different forces in defining a process deemed more efficient and better suited to the context. Thierry Rakotonarivo invites relevant stakeholders to actively participate in consultations and present their proposals. The message also addresses political parties and movements intending to compete: they are called upon to begin their preparations. Less than a year before the announced deadline, the Ceni displays confidence: operationally, July 2027 remains an achievable objective.
