Discovery: The Latest Giant Arrives - Meet 'Adansonia bozy'
Madagascar now has one more giant. With the official recognition of 'Adansonia bozy,' the island nation brings its count of endemic baobab species to seven, confirming its status as the world's cradle of these ancient trees. In an official announcement in late July, the Missouri Botanical Garden in the United States revealed that Madagascar has added a 9th baobab species to those catalogued worldwide. The new count stands at seven for Madagascar, one for Africa, and one for Australia. This is a major discovery, comparable to finding a new vaccine. In the late 1990s, leading researchers finalized the list at eight existing species globally. 'The genus Adansonia comprises eight species: A. digitata from continental Africa, A. gregorii from Australia, and six species endemic to Madagascar (A. grandidieri, A. madagascariensis, A. perrieri, A. rubrostipa, A. suarezensis and A. za),' explained David Baum in 'A Systematic Revision of Adansonia' (1995). Everyone largely accepted this until late July 2026. These same researchers now confirm that Madagascar is the birthplace of all baobab species, whether African or Australian. In short, these 'migrations' are explained today by climate fluctuations and ocean currents. This further validates scientific reference studies on this centuries-old tree. 'Baobabs originated in Madagascar approximately 21 million years ago, before subsequently dispersing to continental Africa and Australia through oceanic drift,' report Jun-Nan Wan, Sheng-Wei Wang, Andrew Rowland Leitch and Ilia Josephine Leitch in 'The rise of baobab trees in Madagascar' (2024). The newcomer, 'Adansonia bozy,' was discovered in the Sambirano region in the northwest, near cacao and ylang-ylang plantations. However, due to deforestation, it is already classified as 'critically endangered.' Barely found, and already facing the risk of disappearing forever. Unless, as with lemurs and other species, Western organizations or zoos decide to take some specimens home through exchanges as opaque as a black hole.
