Police are stepping up efforts in the fight against urban crime. During a single day last Thursday, a series of targeted operations conducted across several strategic neighborhoods of the capital resulted in the arrest of five individuals caught red-handed. In Antaniavo, a foot patrol intercepted a burglar as he attempted to flee following a break-in. Despite fierce resistance, the suspect was quickly subdued; police recovered his burglary tools and stolen items. In Ankasina, officers from the 7th district police station apprehended a street robber still holding the stolen goods. Downtown was no exception. In Analakely, the vigilance of passersby helped 1st district police arrest a pickpocket who had just stolen jewelry from a pedestrian. The suspect turned out to be a repeat offender released from prison just a week earlier. A similar incident occurred in Isotry, where 4th district officers chased down and caught a man who had assaulted a woman to snatch her jewelry. Finally, in Soavina Atsimondrano, a pickpocket was caught in the act at the Forello Tanjombato terminus, allowing immediate return of the stolen phone to its owner. Held in custody at various police stations, the five suspects are under investigation before their imminent referral to the prosecutor's office.
