Five people, including the director of a private school, have been detained in a fake diploma case uncovered by the Tana-Ville gendarmerie. In total, eleven people were brought before the courts for forgery and use of forged documents. A young woman was placed under judicial supervision, while five other people were released.
The case began on August 5, 2026, after an official from the University of Antananarivo noticed several irregularities on a diploma presented for certification by a young woman who had gone to the Baccalaureate Office to certify a copy of her diploma. The document presented several irregularities and did not correspond to a genuine diploma.
Verifications showed that the young woman was not among the candidates who obtained the baccalaureate. A candidate in 2024 at a private school, she had failed the exam. She was then taken to the Tana-Ville brigade in Betongolo for investigation purposes.
The investigation identified a school director who was handling people wishing to obtain a diploma. Several public officials were in contact with him, including an official from the Baccalaureate Office, a former secretary who worked at the University of Antananarivo, a university official and an assistant director in charge of a department.
Investigators found four forged diplomas, twelve certified copies of forged diplomas, two forged grade reports and eight certified copies of grade reports. Dozens of identity cards were also discovered at one of the officials' premises.
