Seven hospitals are receiving vital medical equipment worth 36.2 billion ariary, donated by Japan. These donations are part of the non-reimbursable grant project "Medical Equipment Improvement Project in Reference Hospitals," benefiting six university hospital centers (CHU PZAGA and CHU Mahavoky Atsimo in Mahajanga; CHU Tambohobe and CHU Andrainjato in Fianarantsoa; CHU Morafeno and CHU Analakinina in Toamasina) and one regional reference hospital center (CHRR), namely CHRR Betsiboka in Maevatanana. Through these donations, the project aims to strengthen diagnostic and treatment capacities and improve access to medical care. The donation for CHRR Betsiboka was presented on August 12, 2026 in Morafeno, Maevatanana, in the presence of Japan's ambassador, Tojima Hitoshi, and the resident representative of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) in Madagascar, Odawara Kosuke. The equipment package includes three warming tables, an incubator, a phototherapy device, and a fetal monitoring system. These new equipment will improve diagnosis and treatment for mothers and newborns, facilitate access to specialized care, and reduce costly medical evacuations for populations in rural areas. Equipment maintenance is the responsibility of the Malagasy authorities. To ensure sustainable use, teams from the Equipment and Maintenance Service (SEM) received training in Japan, enabling them to perform equipment maintenance work in Madagascar.
