Grocery stores are closing earlier in the evening. The 9 p.m. bar closure is accompanied by changes in the habits of neighborhood shops. In several districts, grocery stores are reducing their opening hours. Some merchants also explain their reluctance to stay open late, particularly due to fear of theft. "Even before this measure, we were already closing at 7 p.m. because we're afraid of thieves," explains Ravaka, owner of a grocery store. For her, early closure is primarily a matter of security. In some well-known grocery stores in the neighborhood, however, a different arrangement has been put in place. Even when the shop is closed, regular customers can go directly to the merchant's home when they need a product. The seller then opens to allow them to make their purchase. This practice remains reserved for shops where a relationship of trust exists between sellers and customers. For other residents, last-minute shopping becomes more complicated. A forgotten item or an unexpected evening need can thus pose a problem, since shops are already closed. In some fokontany, residents are also being encouraged to respect the 9 p.m. closure.
