For the first time, bulletproof glass has been installed in the official tribune of Barea Mahamasina stadium ahead of the June 26 parade to protect visiting foreign heads of state at Madagascar's national celebration.
This unprecedented measure comes as high-ranking foreign officials, including African leaders and representatives from Madagascar's partner nations, are expected to attend. "Heads of state and high-ranking personalities from friendly countries will attend our national celebration," said Ely Razafitombo, Minister of Armed Forces, yesterday to the press, without disclosing guest identities for security reasons.
The installation is part of a reinforced protection system. "We must take all necessary precautions to protect the heads of state attending the event. If an incident occurs, we as the host country will be responsible. That is why all appropriate measures are in place to guarantee the safety and protection of our honored guests," the minister explained.
Each year, the June 26 military parade is a highlight of Madagascar's national celebration. More than a formal ceremony, it symbolizes the commemoration of independence and honors the Malagasy armed forces, celebrating their 66th year of existence this year.
Nearly 3,800 participants will take part in the parade, including military personnel, gendarmes, and police officers. The ceremony will also showcase equipment used by security forces, some from partner countries and others acquired by the state to strengthen operational capacity.
The gates will open at 5:30 a.m., activities begin at 8:30 a.m., and the official parade starts at 10 a.m., lasting three hours. Security measures have been reinforced to manage the event and protect the public, participants, and expected dignitaries. "Security preparation has taken a month. The population has nothing to worry about if they respect the guidelines and planned organization," Razafitombo assured.
For the minister, this celebration must remain a moment of national unity. "We encourage Malagasy people to celebrate this festival together with respect, solidarity, and cohesion," he declared.
