Satellite data and a new monitoring system are improving fire tracking in Protected Areas. The goal is to detect fire outbreaks more quickly and facilitate ground intervention. During a demonstration of the fire surveillance system, fire monitoring in Protected Areas is modernizing. Satellite data now allows remote detection of fire outbreaks, even in hard-to-reach zones. This information is transmitted to the surveillance system to facilitate analysis and verification by field teams. At Madagascar National Parks (MNP) headquarters in Ambatobe, the new Control Room centralizes information related to environmental alerts. Inaugurated Monday, August 10, it provides a clearer picture of the situation at different sites and facilitates coordination with local teams. Satellite alerts are primarily signals. Once detected, they must be analyzed and verified by field agents. Their expertise and knowledge of territories remain essential to confirm the presence of a fire and assess the situation. The SYNERGI-MNP system (a national synergy for optimal responsiveness) strengthens this surveillance chain. It facilitates information flow between patrol teams, Protected Area managers, and headquarters. The objective is to reduce the delay between fire detection and information transmission to intervention personnel. This approach also helps better target surveillance efforts. Available data can help identify zones requiring particular attention and direct teams to affected sectors. The system reflects a commitment to strengthen fire prevention and protection of forest areas. The combination of satellite data, digital monitoring, and field observations should enable faster response to fire outbreaks. With this new surveillance system, MNP seeks to improve fire monitoring in Protected Areas by bringing technological detection closer to human intervention on the ground.
