Water pipe replacement work continues on a new route, causing fresh traffic disruptions in the city center. The urban commune of Antananarivo (CUA) has announced the total or partial closure of certain roads as part of water pipeline installation work under Phase II of the Integrated Sanitation Program for Antananarivo (PIAA II).
"Traffic will be partially cut (on half the roadway) on the road in front of Sainte-Famille school until opposite the 5th district police station in Mahamasina. Traffic will be completely cut on the road in front of Barea stadium in Mahamasina," the CUA stated on its Facebook page.
These measures will be in effect from Monday, August 10, 2026 at 4 a.m. to Saturday, October 31, 2026. The work is expected to last approximately two and a half months.
Several traffic arrangements accompany these closures. The taxi-be stop served by lines 125, 184, 127, 128, and 015, located opposite the Antanimbarinandriana general education college (CEG), is being eliminated. It is being relocated opposite the vehicle sales area in Antanimbarinandriana. On Thursdays, market day, the stop will be exceptionally moved in front of Saint-Joseph Catholic Church in Amparibe.
New detour routes are also planned. From Sainte-Famille school toward Gerb'or Mahamasina, vehicles will pass in front of the Antanimbarinandriana CEG, go around the Senate roundabout in Anosy, then take Cité des jardins before returning to their usual route. From the Ambohidahy tunnel toward Ankadilalana, drivers must continue to the Senate roundabout in Anosy, pass through Cité des jardins, then resume their usual route.
These works are already causing significant traffic disruptions in the city center. Rakotobe street, located opposite the 5th district police station in Mahamasina, remains closed until September 15, 2026. Rainibetsimisaraka street, in front of Tanà Plaza hotel to Petite Vitesse, has been closed since July 9. In Antanimena, the road in front of Malacam stadium is also inaccessible. Other sections could be closed as part of this project.
