A glimmer of hope for those suffering from kidney failure. A disease that has grown exponentially in recent years. The few nephrologists available have yet to explain the cause and origin of this surge. It strikes all age groups without any precautions able to prevent this suffering. Those affected are almost condemned, given the cost of treatment. Only a transplant can cure this scourge and, until now, India has been the preferred destination recommended by doctors. But not everyone has Eric's luck—the comedian from Fou Hehy who returned completely cured after several months in an Indian clinic where he underwent a transplant. The State has already built a treatment unit for this disease in Andohatapenaka, but it remains unused due to lack of authorization for organ transplants. Precisely, the frequency of murders for organ transplants recently may have destroyed the slim chance of seeing this unit serve the many victims of kidney failure. Patients must undergo three dialysis sessions per week, each costing a minimum of four hundred thousand ariary. Lacking means, many patients succumb after a few months of treatment. With the signing of a public-private partnership between the State and an Indian company, dialysis costs should drop considerably. The details of this partnership remain unknown, but what is certain is that it will ease the burden on families during treatment and should thus increase chances of recovery, even if a transplant cannot be performed locally for now. In the meantime, one must truly have strong kidneys, both literally and figuratively.
