The manhunt for two individuals suspected of carrying out an armed robbery came to an end on Monday, August 3, in the commune of Tsinjoarivo, Ambatolampy district. The two men were actively sought after an attack on the home of a gold panner in Taoladravina, Amboasary commune, in Marolambo district, during the night of July 30. During this assault, the perpetrators seized 10 million ariary and gold weighing equipment before fleeing. Alerted by forest rangers about the fugitives' presence in their area, gendarmes from the Antsampandrano-Nord advanced post immediately went to the Ankadivory location, a mandatory passage near a river. With local support, they set up an interception operation to stop the suspects. When the two individuals arrived, law enforcement ordered them to stop. One surrendered immediately without resistance. The second attempted to escape by crossing the river. According to the gendarmerie, he threatened people blocking his path with a makeshift weapon called a "kalaza." Facing this threat, a gendarme used his service weapon in self-defense, hitting the fugitive in the right thigh. Seriously wounded, the suspect was evacuated to Tsinjoarivo health center for initial treatment. However, he succumbed to his injuries during transfer to the gendarmerie post. The second individual, 19 years old, was arrested alive. During questioning, he admitted participating in the robbery. He also stated the attack was carried out by three people and that their third accomplice disappeared after being swept away by river waters during their escape. Gendarmes recovered three million ariary from the two suspects, corresponding to their share of the loot according to their statements, as well as the stolen gold weighing equipment and the makeshift weapon used in the attack. The recovered items will be returned to their owner after judicial procedures. An investigation is ongoing to establish all circumstances of the case and locate the third suspected group member, still missing. The arrested suspect will be presented to the Ambatolampy prosecutor's office after questioning.
