On August 4 and 5, 2026, six children died in Antsongobato, in the commune of Ambohitsimanova, Antsirabe II district. These successive deaths alarmed residents of the fokontany, raising suspicions of a contagious disease. On August 4, three children succumbed. Three others died the following day. All the children were under seven years old. Alerted, gendarmerie units from Vakinankaratra and a medical team from the Vakinankaratra regional public health directorate were dispatched to the scene. According to health officials' findings and analyses conducted, measles was identified as the cause of these deaths. According to reports, three other sick children are currently receiving treatment at the Antsongombato CSB I health center. Simultaneously, efforts to identify potential contact cases and verify the vaccination status of children were immediately launched. Furthermore, to prevent disease spread, the fokontany community was urged to remain vigilant and visit the nearest health center promptly if suspicious symptoms appear. As a reminder, measles is an extremely contagious viral disease transmitted by airborne droplets, typically manifesting with high fever, cough, nasal discharge, and a rash covering the entire body. Since the disease can cause severe complications, death occurs mainly in unvaccinated or under-vaccinated children. Thus, vaccination remains the best prevention method against measles. In Antsirabe II, an emergency vaccination campaign has just been launched to stop virus circulation.
