At a Cabinet meeting held Wednesday, the government decided to extend the validity period of travel documents from five to ten years. This long-awaited reform, particularly by Malagasy citizens abroad, should reduce administrative procedures and lower costs associated with renewals. The measure fulfills a commitment recently made by President Michaël Randrianirina during his meeting with the Malagasy diaspora in Egypt. Speaking to compatriots based in that country, the head of state had promised modernization of consular services and simplified passport procedures. Beyond extending validity periods, the government is also preparing the next phase, particularly the digitalization of procedures. An online solution is currently under study to allow Malagasy nationals residing abroad to more easily submit passport applications without being systematically required to travel to diplomatic or consular representations. This demand has been among the main concerns expressed for years by the diaspora. Delays, sometimes costly travel, and complex formalities have been regular obstacles denounced by Malagasy communities living outside the country. In Madagascar, authorities highlight progress already achieved in passport issuance. The Public Security Ministry services have recorded notable improvements in file processing times and user reception. These efforts have resulted in a significant decrease in complaints, indicating more efficient operations. The extension of passport validity and the digitalization project reflect a stated commitment to modernize administrative services while meeting the expectations of citizens, whether they live in Madagascar or abroad.
