A fire that broke out Tuesday in Antsahambilo, Ivato, claimed the lives of a mother and daughter and left eighteen people homeless. The blaze destroyed the house entirely.
Two lives lost. A 16-year-old girl, who had arrived just three days earlier to spend her vacation with her mother in Ivato municipality, died in a fire that also claimed the life of her 42-year-old mother during the night of Tuesday to Wednesday.
The fire started around 10:20 p.m. in their home in Antsahambilo. Flames spread rapidly, trapping the two victims in their bedroom with no chance of escape. The cause of the fire remains undetermined. Authorities suspect an electrical short circuit or embers from a fire used to heat broiler chickens. An explosion of a motorcycle fuel tank may have accelerated the spread of flames. Six families, totaling eighteen people, were displaced. Material losses are estimated at nearly 70 percent of their belongings.
Efforts
Residents, organized in a chain of solidarity, fought the flames until they were extinguished around 11:10 p.m., as firefighters did not intervene. Eyewitness accounts describe a night of chaos and helplessness. A neighbor recounts that the victims, frightened by an explosion near their door from the electrical meter, tried to take refuge inside the house, but flames quickly engulfed the space, preventing any escape.
"We understood they were still inside," one witness said, explaining that residents could only continue their efforts to contain the fire.
The brother of one displaced person describes the rapid spread: "When my motorcycle's fuel tank exploded, the fire blazed even more intensely." According to him, the wind that was blowing fueled the fire, making any rescue attempt impossible. Another witness added: "The woman and her daughter cried for help, but the smoke and fire made access impossible. Even the small window through which they might have jumped was already surrounded by flames."
In the morning, Analamanga region governor Clémence Raharinirina and Ivato mayor Penjy Randrianarisoa visited the site to offer support and emergency aid to affected families. They took charge of organizing the funerals.
