Water shortage at the Andekaleka dam is directly affecting the performance of the Andekaleka hydroelectric plant. During the southern winter period, when rainfall is scarce, water levels have dropped significantly, impacting the plant's production capacity. According to JIRAMA, the Andekaleka hydroelectric plant is barely able to produce 50 MW of electricity during the day, while its production capacity is 120 MW. Currently, electricity production from the Andekaleka plant cannot meet demand during peak consumption hours in the evening. From 100 MW, production could fall to as low as 40 MW during these peak hours. Artificial Rain To address the water shortage, JIRAMA, in partnership with Météo Madagascar, conducted a cloud seeding operation yesterday to trigger rainfall over the Andekaleka area. With favorable meteorological conditions in place, the operation was successfully carried out. If these favorable weather conditions persist, additional cloud seeding flights are planned from Thursday, August 6, 2026, through Saturday, August 8, 2026. The goal is to maintain sufficient water levels at the Andekaleka hydroelectric dam.
