A 4.2 magnitude earthquake occurred yesterday at 1:40 p.m. in the Mozambique Channel, near the island of Nosy Mitsio in the North. Its epicenter, at an indeterminate depth, is classified as shallow. No damage or direct reports of tremors were recorded. The nearest city, Nosy Be with its 53,000 inhabitants, located 68 km south of the epicenter, experienced weak tremors, while in the central region, 680 km away, the earthquake remained completely imperceptible. This tremor is part of 2026, already marked by significant tectonic activity in the country, dominated by the 5.6 magnitude earthquake that struck the Itasy region on January 24. Strongly felt as far as Tananarive, it caused panic, cracks in homes, and damaged old structures. It was followed by several aftershocks and moderate tremors recorded throughout the months in the central and coastal areas.
