Antsohihy: Police Seize 600 Kilos of Contraband Rice
Traders clashed with authorities, but the suspects managed to escape, abandoning their cargo. Around 20 sacks of rice, estimated at 600 kilos total, were seized in what represents a major operation against rice trafficking in Antsohihy district. According to reports, dried rice weighing approximately 600 kilos was confiscated at the end of the weekend in Ambodimanary commune. Prior to this operation, police received information from local sources in Ambodimanary about individuals illegally transporting multiple sacks of rice southward through the fokontany. Officers deployed to the scene and encountered the suspects. However, when the traffickers spotted the authorities, they fled, abandoning their merchandise. Police attempted to pursue them, but darkness and the perpetrators' familiarity with the terrain allowed them to escape. The seized rice has been documented and recorded as evidence. Investigations continue to identify the owners of the contraband.
