A macabre discovery was made in the fokontany of Tsinjony, a rural commune in Behenjy, Ambatolampy district. On Saturday, August 1st, around 5 p.m., the fokontany chief alerted the Behenjy gendarmerie outpost after discovering that a family tomb had been desecrated. Dispatched to the scene, officers found a stone vault located approximately 300 meters east of the village. The perpetrators had forced open the burial site before attacking the remains of the deceased. Thirteen bodies were desecrated and all long bones still present appear to have been removed. Investigators were unable to determine precisely how many bones were stolen, as several of the buried bodies were old and already reduced to dust. Initial findings suggest the acts are not recent. According to gendarmes, the desecration likely occurred approximately two months ago. The grass and aloe plants torn up to access the vault were already dried, suggesting the perpetrators acted well before the crime was discovered. Due to the late hour, officers provisionally sealed the tomb. The following day, the tomb's owners were to gather the scattered human remains and shrouds to allow their reburial in accordance with tradition. Searches conducted in the surrounding area yielded no results. Residents were urged to increase surveillance of cemeteries and promptly report any suspicious behavior to authorities. An investigation has been opened to identify those responsible for this violation of a burial site and determine the motives behind this theft of human remains. Investigations continue, as this type of act is sometimes associated with occult practices or illicit trafficking, though no evidence currently allows investigators to favor any particular lead in this matter.
