Agents of the Antananarivo Urban Municipality went on strike, causing disruptions for users. Dissatisfied users were seen in the 3rd district. Tensions rose in the 3rd district of the Antananarivo Urban Municipality (CUA) yesterday afternoon. Users who came to retrieve copies of civil status documents were forced to leave empty-handed. Around 1:30 p.m., district agents informed them, after long minutes of waiting, that no civil status document copies would be issued on Monday, August 3 and Tuesday, August 4, due to the municipal strike. "There are phone numbers on the submitted requests. They should call each of us, or at least send a message to inform us in advance. We waited in line for hours and now they tell us this service is closed," complained a woman at the front of the queue at the civil status office. Some came from far away, like from Mahitsy. "As civil servants, the public interest should come first. If you don't want to work anymore, you should step aside," protested a father. This is the second time in a week that this service has been shut down in this district. Nicole Rasoaheriniana, a mother, had already made the trip without being able to retrieve her documents on Tuesday, July 28. "They explained that they were on strike and I had to follow the news to know when services would resume. I came back today, but the service still isn't working," she lamented. This service interruption directly blocks users in their procedures. This is the case for Nicole Rasoaheriniana, pressed for time. "This document is essential for my work. The deadline to submit my file is this Wednesday, but I don't know if the counter will have reopened by then," she worried. The 3rd district was the only one to suspend civil status services yesterday during the CUA strike, with agents demonstrating at City Hall in Analakely. "All services operated normally in the 5th district. Following a meeting this morning, employees decided to work, except for two who joined the social movement. This decision was made freely, without any pressure," said Richard Rakoto, delegate to the mayor of the 5th district. At Analakely, the protest rally drew few participants. "Employees were afraid. They were threatened with recording the names of all participants, which discouraged many," said Jean François Raharijaona, president of the CUA Employees Union (SMKAR). Faced with this low turnout and these "threats," the union decided to suspend the strike. "We will wait for the general assembly with the president of the special delegation (PDS), which the technical advisor announced," continued Jean François Raharijaona. He clarified that the demand concerning housing allowance remains. "We insist on payment of this housing allowance, starting from July," he added. CUA unionists, however, do not share this analysis. "It is the State that should pay this housing allowance, not the CUA," said Nirintsoa Jaona Clément, president of the Autonomous Union of the CUA.
