Financial compensation was distributed Wednesday to 63 residents who voluntarily vacated land at Toamasina port's "Port Sec III" zone, relocated to "Port Sec II". The beneficiaries received compensation corresponding to their properties, which covered approximately 250m² each, along with land ownership documents. All procedures remain ongoing. The port authority justified this action by noting that residents who purchased properties in "Port Sec III" fell victim to fraudulent schemes by individuals claiming to be land dealers and traders at that time. Compensation ranged from 10 to 20 million ariary depending on property type, whether wooden or concrete structures. "SPAT is a public and community-focused enterprise," stated General Manager Randriambahoaka Heritiana Anicet, emphasizing the need for proper oversight of all announced commitments, as implementation will begin shortly, explaining the ongoing relocations. The operation was overseen by the Minister of Transport and Meteorology Ramanambola Herizo, along with local authorities from Toamasina I, II and Fenerivo Atsinanana. The minister stated the project will provide rapid economic stimulus to Madagascar and Toamasina through the development of a heavy vehicle parking facility, generating employment and economic activity. Beyond compensation and assistance provided by SPAT to long-term residents, the authority also announced improvements to access roads and opportunities for other operators to lease new land. A "single window" service continues for residents to submit documentation for SPAT assistance. Port authorities also engaged mediators to help residents understand initial agreements, allowing those who felt misled to recover their funds.
