Twenty years after opening its embassy in the island nation, Rabat is highlighting expanding cooperation driven by institutional, academic, and humanitarian exchanges.
The residence of Morocco's ambassador in Androhibe hosted the 27th Throne Festival celebration, marking the 27th anniversary of King Mohammed VI's accession to the throne. In his address, Ambassador Mohammed Benjilany reaffirmed Rabat's determination to deepen its partnership with Madagascar.
"Morocco is resolutely committed to continuing its mutually beneficial cooperation and partnership with Madagascar," he declared before members of the private sector, authorities, diplomatic corps, and numerous guests.
The ambassador described bilateral relations as "solid and forward-looking." The celebration held symbolic significance as 2026 marks the 20th anniversary of Morocco's embassy opening in Antananarivo, an event that launched official diplomatic relations established in April 1994 with a joint communiqué signed by both states.
Over the decades, Moroccan-Malagasy relations have progressively diversified. The ambassador emphasized that "the spirit of brotherhood, cooperation, and solidarity between the two countries and peoples has continuously strengthened."
Exchanges now cover numerous domains including capacity building, expertise sharing, and technical cooperation. In 2026, concrete progress emerged in higher education. Following the Malagasy Foreign Minister's official visit to Morocco in spring 2026, the scholarship quota for Malagasy students increased to 100 university scholarships annually.
Beyond institutional relations, Rabat highlights cooperation with strong human dimensions. According to the ambassador, the past three years have seen a new, less formal but particularly significant dynamic emerge, focused on supporting Madagascar's most vulnerable children—an approach reflecting the Kingdom's commitment to complementing diplomatic action with socially-oriented initiatives.
