Energy access remains one of Madagascar's greatest challenges. According to the 2025 Tracking SDG 7 report, only 39% of the population had access to electricity in 2023, leaving approximately 18.4 million people without power. In rural areas, electricity access is even lower at just 11% in 2022. Under Mission 300, a World Bank and African Development Bank initiative, Madagascar's National Energy Pact targets 80% electricity access by 2030. Additionally, 80% of new connections should be achieved through decentralized and off-grid energy solutions, such as those installed and financed by Sun King, an American company and global leader in off-grid solar energy that recently established operations in Madagascar.

Five-Year Plan

"We commit to investing up to $50 million in Madagascar to provide over 1.5 million new electrical connections by 2030. Approximately 7.5 million people living in rural areas without electricity will be targeted. We also aim to create 1,000 jobs through our five-year implementation plan to promote rural electrification and contribute to the country's economic growth. This ambitious plan requires support from our technical and financial partners and the Malagasy government. Upon launching our activities, we have already created thirty jobs," said Victor Agandi, Sun King's Vice President for East and Southern Africa, during the inauguration of the company's first store in Itaosy yesterday.

Flexible Payment

The DECIM project (Digital and Energy Connectivity for Inclusion in Madagascar), funded by the World Bank and led by the Ministry of Energy and Hydrocarbons, will help rural communities access Sun King products at affordable prices. The Itaosy national gendarmerie brigade received solar kits during the launch ceremony. Sun King has also signed a new partnership agreement with Yas Madagascar for exclusive distribution of its domestic solar systems under the MBalik brand, combined with flexible payment options based on usage ("pay as you go"). Yas Madagascar has already equipped over 250,000 households with solar kits in six years.
