An unplanned pregnancy has claimed another life. In Mandritsara, a 24-year-old woman died following an unsafe abortion. The pregnant woman reportedly succumbed to hemorrhaging. The tragedy occurred at the home of a woman known locally for performing abortions using traditional massages and herbal infusions. Maternal mortality linked to abortion remains high in Madagascar. According to a final strategic evaluation report on contraception needs and priorities, unplanned pregnancies, and post-abortion care in Madagascar, published by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), the 408 maternal deaths per 100,000 live births recorded in 2021 are linked, among other factors, to complications from unsafe abortions that occur when pregnancies are unwanted and unplanned, due to lack of access to contraceptive methods. The same report notes that approximately 46 to 63 percent of unwanted pregnancies result in abortion, often clandestine and unsafe. In Madagascar, abortion remains prohibited, whether voluntary pregnancy termination or therapeutic pregnancy interruption. A bill proposed by former parliamentarian Masy Goulamaly to authorize therapeutic pregnancy interruption, particularly in cases of danger to the mother or child, did not succeed. It faced religious opposition. The text is currently on hold. A bill to decriminalize abortion is set to be resubmitted to parliament.
