The death of a 48-year-old woman, which occurred recently in Vavatenina district, has brought back into focus the possibility of mpox worsening in cases of vulnerable infected persons or in the absence of timely care. This death in Vavatenina was the twentieth recorded in Madagascar since the start of the mpox epidemic in the country. Yesterday, a bulletin from the Ministry of Public Health, reporting on the situation of this epidemic, reported a new death included in statistics covering July 24, 2026. This brings the total number of mpox-related deaths in Madagascar to 21 since mid-December 2025 through July 24, 2026. As for new cases recorded on July 24, statistics report 48 newly confirmed cases, located respectively in the districts of Toamasina I (16), Mahajanga (13), Sambava (5), Antananarivo Renivohitra (3), Manakara (2), Antalaha (2), Fénérive-Est (2), Antananarivo Avaradrano (1) and Ambato Boeni (1).
