Morondava, capital of the Menabe region, will host the joint celebration of three world days on climate, biodiversity and soil from June 28-30 next. From June 28-30, 2026, Madagascar is innovating by bringing together World Environment Day, World Biodiversity Day and the Day to Combat Desertification. This triple celebration reflects a major awakening: ecological crises are interconnected and require integrated responses. Deforestation, drought, species loss... these phenomena directly threaten the livelihoods of populations. Facing this reality, stakeholders, including the Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development (MEDD), are banking on concrete solutions ranging from ecosystem restoration to sustainable agricultural practices, including mobilizing local communities. But challenges remain significant. Poverty, dependence on natural resources and lack of funding continue to hinder large-scale implementation.

Under Pressure

The choice of Morondava is not arbitrary. The Menabe region alone illustrates the country's contradictions. Rich in biodiversity, with its dry forests and emblematic baobabs, it also faces rapid environmental degradation. Bush fires, extensive agriculture and timber exploitation are causing alarming environmental damage in this part of the island. Despite this, local initiatives are emerging. Reforestation, community resource management, mangrove restoration are actions showing that balance is possible. In Morondava as throughout the country, solutions exist, but their success will depend on the ability to reconcile nature protection with population needs.
