Thirty cases are currently being handled by the judiciary concerning missing persons across the country. The phenomenon is taking on a national dimension. Faced with the multiplication of missing person reports and the emotion sparked by several deaths widely shared on social media, the government is mobilizing. An operational center has been established to coordinate the response at the national level, while authorities unveiled yesterday the first official figures of this crisis that has become a genuine state affair. Since January 2026, 256 people have been reported missing, announced the Justice Minister. Among them, 175 have already been found. According to the data presented, 74% of the people found had voluntarily left their homes, a clarification intended to counter rumors and concerns fueled in recent days on social media. The statistics also report 35 deaths, eight of which are considered suspicious. These cases are currently undergoing thorough investigations. On the judicial front, 30 proceedings are underway concerning the disappearances. The Justice Minister indicated that investigations had already yielded several confessions. One case reportedly uncovered an instance of human sacrifice, a revelation that underscores the gravity of certain facts being examined by investigators. Beyond the security and judicial response, the Executive wanted to send a message of unity and compassion. Yesterday, an ecumenical service was held in front of Antananarivo City Hall to implore "God's grace" in the face of this phenomenon causing public concern. The ceremony, conducted by leaders of Churches that are members of the Ecumenical Council of Christian Churches (FFKM), was also marked by a tribute to victims and the government's condolences to bereaved families. The publication of these official figures comes as missing persons continue to fuel a climate of growing anxiety in the country. By establishing a national operational center and centralizing information, authorities are seeking to regain control of communications, accelerate investigations, and reassure a population shaken by a succession of tragic incidents.
