The Foundation for Protected Areas and Biodiversity of Madagascar (FAPBM) has awarded reporting grants to four winners of the 3rd edition of the Media for Protected Areas competition. Philiberte Amiko and Philippine Rasoafara (radio category), Ando Randrianarimanana (print media category), and Aina Rabetany (television category) produced reports highlighting conservation challenges and their direct impact on local populations.
"FAPBM seeks funding for nature conservation. (...) The real danger lies in our ignorance of our biodiversity's value, not in lack of money. Environmental protection is not just about laws or technicians; it also requires journalists to bridge the gap with the public. We only protect and love what we know," said FAPBM Executive Director Dr Rija Ranaivoarison, emphasizing that this competition is an investment in the future.
The reports showcase concrete results from FAPBM's field work: in Anketrevo, new rice cultivation techniques boosted yields while reducing forest pressure; in Andringitra, residents' living standards improved significantly; in Beheloke, women increased their involvement in family economy and community development.
"Man needs nature, but nature does not need man," stressed Kiady Rakotondravoninala, Director General of Governance and Environment at the Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development.
