For families traveling by car, fuel expenses add significantly, reaching at least eight hundred thousand ariary for round-trip travel. "We spent three hundred thousand ariary on fuel coming to Mahajanga and the same returning. Our vehicle consumes little fuel as it's a small, light car. Daily activity, meal and snack expenses range between thirty and forty thousand ariary. That's already enormous for our family. We must tighten our belts with three children. Skewer prices reached 500 ariary each. We order at least thirty each time, plus sides and drinks. We prepared this trip for months, but prices remain very high. We budgeted extra for fuel, meals, transport and small purchases," explains one mother.

Affordable Options
Those unable to rent hotel rooms, guesthouses or private villas can find vacation homes with affordable rooms. Other facilities like schools also offer rooms at reduced costs.

For dining, establishments serve typical Malagasy menus and dishes. Evenings, some families visit small eateries for vary amin'anana or "composed" meals to limit spending. Large families sometimes prepare their own meals to save money, even bringing vegetables from the capital.

Despite these difficulties and rising prices, visitors continue flooding to Mahajanga. Its climate, safety and diverse tourist attractions maintain its status as the nation's premier tourism destination.
