Over the past weekend, a food poisoning incident occurred in the Antalaha district. Many people were hospitalized as a result, including two young children who died. Around 10 a.m., local health authorities received reports that three-year-old children had died after consuming contaminated seafood in the Ambohitralalina commune. Health officials immediately deployed to the scene. Prior to this, local health services had already begun investigations, including those from the health center. Approximately 106 people were reported to have consumed the contaminated seafood. Some of them required hospitalization due to serious health complications. Among them were two young children: one three years old and another 18 months old, both of whom died after consuming the poisoned seafood. Other patients remain under hospital observation, while some have been discharged. Medical teams from CSB-II Ambohitralalina immediately launched an emergency response at that time. The objective was to urgently inform the population that all those who consumed the contaminated seafood must visit CSB-II as soon as possible, according to reports. An investigation into the incident was also opened by local authorities. It is noted that seafood poisoning, also known as ciguatera, has previously caused mass casualties. While consumption and sales have been regulated, cases continue to reappear. Lack of awareness and frequent food scarcity are cited as reasons why people continue to consume contaminated seafood, according to reports.
