The city of Mahanoro has been shaken by news of a shipwreck. A woman and her daughter perished in the sinking of the vessel "Zanadrano 3", which occurred yesterday around 4 a.m. off Ambodiharina, in the Mahanoro district. The boat, which departed from Betampona heading to Mahanoro, was carrying around twenty passengers, including seven children and thirteen adults, accompanied by three crew members. On board were also approximately six tons of cargo, mainly coffee and pepper. According to the captain's account, the vessel already had cracks before departure, but the journey proceeded despite the overload. This combination of structural weakness and excess weight is believed to have caused the tragedy. The bodies of the victims are being held in Ambodiharina. Authorities, faced with the absence of identity documents on the deceased, are appealing to the public for help in identifying them. Residents, who depend on these transport means to connect communes and transport agricultural products, regularly face such risks. Authorities are considering strengthening safety controls.
