As part of an awareness campaign on sexual violence in university settings, NGO Alternatives Madagascar organized a conference titled "Campus for Equality" at the School of Law and Political Science (EDSP) of Ambondrona University last Thursday. Invited to this campaign, Sitraka Maria Patrick Razanabahoaka, territorial director of the Independent Anti-Corruption Bureau (Bianco) in Mahajanga, provided students with insights into the legal framework and criminal procedures related to sexual violence in universities. The head of Bianco in Mahajanga led an interactive discussion with students on the theme: "Sexual Violence in University Settings: Stop Corruption and Sexual Harassment at University." In Mahajanga, such violence often manifests as "sexual corruption" or academic blackmail. The Anti-Corruption Unit (PAC) in Mahajanga established precedent two years ago by convicting a teacher who solicited sexual favors in exchange for good grades. This intervention helped students better understand applicable legal provisions and the criminal process, from reporting to judgment. "The objective is to promote the fight against corruption and encourage young people to report reprehensible acts in university settings. Don't hesitate to speak out, dare to report. Bianco considers the student youth as the first link in a chain of sustainable integrity, by providing them with legal tools to act. It thus takes concrete action: making law a bulwark and reporting a civic reflex," declared the Bianco director. A capacity-building session for Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) and journalists was also held at Bianco's headquarters in Mahajanga Be last Thursday. Discussions covered general aspects of corruption, as well as the most frequently encountered corruption offenses and related infractions in public administration. The objectives included updating and deepening participants' knowledge of legal and institutional mechanisms for combating corruption. It also aimed to equip journalists with investigation, advocacy, and citizen monitoring tools for public policies, and strengthen synergy between CSOs and media. The initiative seeks to increase the impact of awareness, prevention, and reporting actions. Clarifications were also provided on Bianco's missions and mechanisms for prevention, reporting, and combating corruption.
