A high-level joint mission from the African Union (AU) and the United Nations (UN) stayed in Madagascar from July 12-19, 2026. Led by Ambassador Mohamed Idriss Farah, special envoy of the AU Commission president, and Parfait Onanga-Anyanga, special representative of the UN secretary-general to the AU, the delegation met with Colonel Michaël Randrianirina, president of the Refoundation, government members, institutional leaders, and the Christian Council of Churches of Madagascar (FFKM).
Following this visit, both organizations praised the willingness of Malagasy authorities to quickly engage in inclusive political dialogue to reach consensus on institutional reforms and prepare transparent, credible, and peaceful elections. They called on all political actors and vital forces of the nation to participate responsibly in this process.
The mission also expressed concern about recent security incidents in the capital and provinces, while reaffirming its commitment to the rule of law. The AU and UN assured their availability to support Madagascar in its efforts toward stability, social cohesion, and a return to consensual institutional order.
