The mpox epidemic has claimed another victim in Madagascar: a 26-year-old man treated in the DIANA region died from the disease on July 16, 2026. This death brings the total number of mpox fatalities in the island nation to 18. The latest situation report on the mpox epidemic in Madagascar, released yesterday, indicates 14 new cases reported on July 18, with 9 confirmed following testing. These cases are located in the districts of Fénérive-Est, Antsiranana I, Antsiranana II, Morondava, and Toliara II. Since the start of the epidemic in the country over a seven-month period (from December 18, 2025 to July 18, 2026), Madagascar has recorded 4,482 reported cases and 2,905 confirmed cases out of 4,024 tests, representing a positivity rate of 72.19%. Additionally, a total of 2,047 people have been declared recovered from mpox during this period.
